First marriage

Liu and Zhou were both from Xinxing township but met and fell in love when they worked in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang, in the early 1990s. Liu was a carpenter and she was a waitress at a small restaurant.

"He was tall, handsome and generous, as well as reliant," Zhou said. In Liu's view, Zhou was "beautiful when she was young, and looked virtuous."

In 1994, Liu and Zhou held their wedding ceremony in their hometown, and in 1996, they had their daughter.

Life seemed to be so sweet at that time. Liu did his woodwork in cities, and Zhou stayed home taking care of their daughter.

However, things changed when Liu fell from a building in 2000, and became paralyzed. Liu became a man who could not take care of himself and was confined to bed. He relied on his wife to care for him, even with helping him tend to basic bodily functions.

Liu, in his heart a strong man, didn't think the couple could live this way and asked his wife to buy him sleeping pills so that he could commit suicide. But Zhou cried and hugged him every time her husband expressed this desire, saying, "We are a family, I will not drop you. We get through this pain together."
