Xi's proposal noted in UN resolution

A new UN Security Council resolution reflects the consensus of the international community by incorporating for the first time the notion of "a community of shared future for mankind", a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

Resolution 2344 (2017), adopted on Friday, extends the mandate for a UN assistance mission in Afghanistan until March 17, 2018. The Security Council stressed "economic and social development in Afghanistan and the region to create a community of shared future for mankind".

When addressing the UN Office at Geneva in January, President Xi Jinping spoke in detail about "building a community of shared future for mankind", an important concept proposed by China.

Commenting on the Security Council's resolution, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in Beijing on Monday that China hopes to work with fellow United Nations members to build such a community that features "lasting peace, universal security, shared prosperity, openness, inclusiveness, cleanliness and beauty".

Liu Jieyi, the Chinese permanent representative to the UN, said incorporating the concept shows the important contribution China's ideas and plans have made to global governance.

Xinhua said in a commentary that "the UN's acceptance and incorporation of the Chinese concept into its resolution is of great significance and will have far-reaching influence".

"The concept has shown China's global view and responsibility as a big power, and is bound to leave its mark in international relations," the commentary said.

The Security Council also urged further efforts to strengthen the process of regional economic cooperation, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, to promote sustainable growth and create jobs in Afghanistan and the region.

It urged all stakeholders to "ensure a secure environment" for those initiatives.

This was another example of the Security Council made over the Belt and Road Initiative, Hua said.

Liu, the envoy, said the latest Security Council move is conducive to creating a favorable atmosphere for China to host the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing this May so participants can brainstorm on international development.
