Pema Wangdu appointed new Lhasa Party chief

Pema Wangdu, former Party chief of Tibet's Ngari prefecture, has been appointed the Party chief of Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet autonomous region, it was announced on Monday.

He replaces Qi Zhala, who was elected chairman of the Standing Committee of the Tibet People's Congress on Sunday.

Pema Wangdu, an ethnic Tibetan, was born in Markham county in Tibet's eastern Qamdo prefecture.

He worked in hydrology and water conservancy in Qamdo and Lhasa for more than 25 years before becoming deputy Party chief of the Ngari prefecture in 2012. He was promoted to Party chief three years later.
