HANGZHOU - Eastern Chinese province Zhejiang on Wednesday reported the country's first dengue fever patient this year among people returning from overseas.

The patient, a Chinese national, returned from Dhaka, Bangladesh on Sept 3 and experienced headaches, weakness and fever. The patient reported his symptoms to the local inspection and quarantine bureau on Tuesday.

The patient, now in a stable condition in hospital, likely contracted the disease through a mosquito bite, health authorities said.

South China's Guangdong province is in the grip of an outbreak of dengue fever, with 443 cases reported.

The fever is caused by dengue virus borne by mosquito in tropical areas. Patients usually have symptoms such as fever, headaches, skin rash and muscle and joint pain.
