Photo shows a statue of Liu Hulan in the Childrens' Palace in East China's Shanghai city. On Jan 12, 1947, the Yen hsi-shan army invaded Liu Hulan's village and Liu Hulan, betrayed by a traitor, was beheaded cruelly when she was only 15 years old. It was in her memory that Mao Zedong wrote the famous line, "a great life, a glorious death."[Photo/IC]

China's State news agency Xinhua published a story in June refuting rumors against Liu Hulan alleging that the martyr was the mistress of a company commander of the Chinese Red Army. Liu was beheaded when she was only 15 after being betrayed by a traitor in 1947 during the war of Liberation (1946-49).
