Cherry flowers bloom in friendship

Japanese organizers of the cherry planting program also visited more than 20 cities across China.

Masahiro Kohara, the Japanese consul-general in Shanghai, said he hopes the International Cherry Blossom Weeks can provide a chance for the countries to reach mutual understanding and promote friendship.

"Japan is greeting the cherry blossom season now and many Chinese friends are visiting Japan," said Kohara. "Last year the consulate issued 874,000 visas, which surged from 435,000 in 2012."

"However, fewer Japanese have visited China in recent years. What worries us is that the young generation of Japan keeps their distance from China.

"I have reiterated since I took office that visiting each other, watching and experiencing the other country is crucial for promoting mutual understanding and improving feelings between the two countries," said Kohara.

"I hope that under the cherry blossoms, the friendship between Japan and China can be passed on to the young generation."
