Shohrat Zakir was voted as the chairman of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region by the deputies to the 12th Xinjiang regional People's Congress in the regional capital of Urumqi on Saturday.
The 61-year-old was appointed as the acting chairman of Xinjiang the day after Nur Bekri, the former chairman was appointed the head of the National Energy Administration, the country's top energy agency and deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission on January 1.
