URUMQI - A young man has received a seven-day administrative detention in Kuitun City in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region for spreading terrorist rumors, local police confirmed on Sunday.
The 26-year-old unemployed man, surnamed Zhang, posted photos and false information on Sept. 5, claiming that terrorists had stormed the Kuitun railway station on his microblog, online chat group and Wechat accounts, said the public security bureau of Kuitun.
The rumors quickly aroused public concern. Kuitun police authorities received the reports and quickly caught Zhang.
Investigations found that photos Zhang posted online with the rumors were taken during an anti-terrorism exercise on Sept.5 at the Kuitun railway station.
Zhang took the photos at the drill site and posted them online under the name of "xiaokui." He was caught by police hours after posting the rumors.
