BEIJING - President Xi Jinping met with Jesus Posada, president of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, here on Friday.

During the meeting, Xi hailed bilateral ties between China and Spain over the 40 years since the two countries established diplomatic relations, and especially after the two countries established a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2005.

"Spain has become one of China's best friends and partners in the European Union," Xi said.

The Chinese president said China will enhance the friendly relationship with Spain politically, economically and culturally, as well as boost cooperation on major international issues, including the reform of the United Nations, climate change, sustainable development and dialogues between different cultures, to jointly promote world peace and development.

Highlighting the significance of China-EU relations, Xi said there is immense potential for economic cooperation between the two sides, as they are mutually complementary.

Xi said China and the EU should appropriately address their disputes through dialogues and consultations in the spirit of mutual respect and mutual benefit.

"The Chinese government is willing to work together with Spain to further step up bilateral relations as well as relations between China and the EU," he added.

Posada said he looks forward to more mutual support and closer practical cooperation with China.

As an EU member, Spain supports China-EU cooperation, Posada said, adding that the cooperation is of strategic significance.

Spain will give play to its advantages and make greater contributions to the development of the relationship between China and the 28-member bloc, Posada said.
