The 62-year-old suspect, a man surnamed Fan, beat one of his colleagues to death and subsequently killed five others, including three of his colleagues, a driver and a sentry on Saturday, municipal police said.

Four others -- a sentry, a police officer and two of Fan's colleagues -- were injured. They are receiving medical treatment and are in stable condition, local police said.

Fan, who is director of the general office of Shanghai Guangyu Fine Chemical Co., Ltd., had a dispute over a factory equipment transfer with two colleagues surnamed Li and Zhang, respectively, on Saturday.

Fan beat Zhang to death during their fight. As he fled, he gunned down a driver and drove the man's car back to the plant. On his way back, he killed a sentry at a military barracks and injured another with a hunting rifle.

He shot three others dead and injured two at the gate of the plant when he returned at 11 p.m. Saturday.

Police captured Fan at 11:15 pm at the plant. A police officer was shot and injured during the process.

Shanghai Party chief Han Zheng and Mayor Yang Xiong ordered relevant authorities to handle the aftermath properly, make a thorough investigation of the case, release related information in a timely manner, and maintain social stability.
