About 82 people die from cancer every day in Shanghai, which has a higher cancer rate than the national average, according to the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The city reports nearly 50,000 new cases and 30,000 deaths every year, the center said on Sunday.

The cancer rate in Shanghai is about 390 out of every 100,000 people, while the national level is at 286.

Lung cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, liver cancer and breast cancer are the top five cancers among Shanghai residents.

A large number of aging people and unhealthy lifestyles have contributed to the city's high incidence rate of cancer, officials said.

According to Shanghai's health authorities, the city will carry out early detection work for colorectal cancer in local communities.
