BEIJING -- Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei on Wednesday evening expressed the country's shock at attacks on a US consulate in Lybia and voiced strong condemnation of the violent deeds.
"We are shocked at attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi that caused the death and injury of a number of people, including the US ambassador. And we strongly condemn the violent deeds," a press release quoted Hong as saying.
China believes the reigning regime of Lybia bears the responsibility and obligation to adopt all necessary measures to protect the life and property integrity of foreign institutions and their staff stationed in the country according to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
Attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi on Tuesday evening killed the the US ambassador to Lybia and several others and wounded more.
