An extensive survey of the Xisha Islands has provided important data for Sansha city planners, a newly founded prefecture-level city on the islands.

The 34-day survey covered the islands name and history, location, area, coastline, population and other information involving the local ecological system and environment, according to a statement on the website of the State Oceanic Administration.

More than 40 scientists and experts researching ecology and botany on the islands took part in the survey.

It is the first time in two decades that authorities have compiled a comprehensive survey of the Xisha Islands, which will play important role in planning Sansha city and in the protection of the country's maritime interests.

Sansha, the establishment of which was approved by the State Council in June, will administer the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha island groups and their surrounding waters in the South China Sea.

After the Xisha Islands' survey, China will launch the second national island survey in 2013, the State Oceanic Administration said.
