US President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao, seeking a steadier footing for the often-troubled US-China relationship, played up the two nations' common interests - and soft-pedaled or ignored longstanding issues that divide them.

- The Wall Street Journal, US

Hu, toasting Obama at the first formal state dinner for China in more than 13 years, praised the US president for bringing the two countries closer together.

- CNN, US

There are countless ways of characterizing the relationship between these two nations, but almost everyone is animated by the idea that we are witnessing a historic shift.

- BBC, UK

Lauding 70 trade agreements with exporters in 12 US states, presidents Barack Obama and Hu Jintao edged away from the fevered rhetoric of recent months to stress mutual dependency, despite lingering tensions.

The visit of President Hu Jintao to the United States will mark the Chinese government's appearance on the world scene as a new superpower and, at the same time, the US' willingness to give this recognition. This differs greatly from Deng Xiaoping's trip in 1979, when Washington did not succeed in defining a mode of relationship with a country that sensed its future role.

- The Korea Times, ROK

China and the US will push bilateral relations to a new level.
