Every day millions of children across China make the vital journey from home to school to receive an education. For some it is a perilous journey crammed into the back of an overloaded van with no safety precautions.
On Nov 16 in Gansu province, 21 people, including 19 children, died after their nine-seat bus carrying 64 people collided head-on with a coal truck. The Ministry of Education urged schools and kindergartens nationwide to conduct safety checks on their school buses.
The crackdown has begun, but as seen in these shocking images, the lessons from the Gansu tragedy have gone unheeded. In different cities across China, dozens of little kids - some standing and without seat belts - are still jammed into shoddy vehicles.
