A ninth-grader was shot near a middle school in South China's Guangdong province Tuesday, local newspaper Nanfang Daily reported.
The teen, surnamed Lin, was shot near a snack bar at 11:40 pm across the gate of Meixi Middle School (attached to Xuwen High School) in Xuwen county of Zhanjiang city.
He died at the hospital, according to police.
A witness surnamed Duan said the attackers were two men in their 20s on a motorbike.
"The man riding the motorbike has long hair to his shoulder, while the other was holding a shotgun," he said. "But their looks and clothing were blurry, since it was late at night."
The attackers fired two shots, according to another witness, and the first bullet grazed the owner of the snack bar.
The public order around the school has been in a state of chaos, a student told the newspaper. Many students go out for a snack after the evening self-study session ends at 11:30 pm.
The police are investigating the case.
