At 38 minutes, Beijingers have longest commute

People in Beijing spend an average of 38 minutes to go to work, the longest among 50 cities in China, said a report by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Niu Wenyuan led a research team on the year-long 2011 China New Urbanization Report. His study calculated commuting times under normal traffic conditions, excluding the time caused by traffic jams.

It showed that the average commuting time in Beijing this year is 14 minutes shorter than last year, but it still tops the list. Shanghai and Guangzhou ranked second, with an average commuting time of 36 minutes.
