MACAO - Macao authorities has started to recall Taiwan cookies found to be tainted with toxic plasticizer DEHP after they were found on local shelves, the Macao Daily Times reported on Thursday.
The newspaper quoted Macao Food Safety Coordination Group as saying that Chuang's "Snow Flake" Square Cookies, a local delicacy from Taiwan, were tested and shown to contain DEHP.
The contaminated sample was collected from a supermarket on June 7 and was later found to contain 3.7ppm DEHP, beyond the 1.5ppm "safety" level, the group added.
It was the first time that food products in Macao were found to be contaminated by any of the 16 types of toxic plasticizers, reports said.
All retail outlets have been ordered to remove the cookies from shelves and locals are urged to temporarily not consume them, according to the group.
The food safety group also stressed that it will continue to carry out random testing on food and beverages, adding that about 80 samples of food and drinks imported from Taiwan were examined since the plasticiser scare emerged.
