SHANGHAI -- Shanghai will hold an international pharmaceutical show at the Shanghai New International Expo Center next month.

The three-day show, CPhI China 2011, starting on June 21, is a big event for 1,500 pharmaceutical enterprises from more than 20 countries and regions to display new medicines and pharmaceutical technologies, said Wang Mingliang, managing director of UBM Sinoexpo.

"The event will be a strong stimulus to exhibitors to expand business at the world market as well as to China's exports of active pharmaceutical ingredients," Wang said.

China sold $20.3 billion worth of active pharmaceutical ingredients to 178 countries and regions in 2010 with focus placed on the markets in Asia, Europe and North America.

"The first quarter of this year still witnessed the fast growth of export in active pharmaceutical ingredients," said Zhao Jingman, director of the Exhibition Sector under China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Medicines and Health Products.

The volume of import and export surpassed $7 billion from January to March, up 29.7 per cent over the same period last year. Exports accounted for $5.36 billion, an increase of 31.3 per cent, while imports were valued at $1.66 billion, a rise of 24.6 per cent, Zhao said.

The exhibition will cover an area of 8,000 square meters to display various kinds of exhibits from about 300 well-known firms, Wang said.

Customs statistics showed that imports and exports of China's plant extracts in the first quarter of this year were valued at $310 million, up 46.4 per cent over the same period last year.

Wang said seminars will be held at the show to discuss ways of how to push forward the development of the pharmaceutical industry.
