Hu's visit draws world's attention

BEIJING - Chinese President Hu Jintao is paying a four-day state visit to the United States at a key time for Chinese and US economic transformation and also for the world economy's recovery.
President Hu and his US counterpart Barack Obama held talks at the White House on Wednesday and jointly met business leaders from the two countries. The two sides also issued a joint statement, agreeing to build a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect
During the visit, Hu and Obama reached consensus on deepening all-round cooperation and mutually beneficial, win-win economic ties. They also reached agreements in macro-economic coordination, comprehensive economic cooperation, investment, energy, environment and so on.
The world has attached great importance to and highly praised the above-said fruits.
World sees positive sign of China-US trade cooperation
China and the United States, as the biggest developing and developed countries in the world, are complementary as regards their economies and have huge potential for more cooperation.
China-US economic ties, despite twists and turns, are in accordance with the two countries' shared desire to boost bilateral cooperation and common development.
At a joint press conference held by Hu and Obama Wednesday, Hu, when talking about China-US trade ties, said although China and the United States have different opinions on some issues, they should demonstrate mutual understanding and look forward to the future, strengthen communication, properly handle differences and boost pragmatic cooperation to better benefit the two peoples.
Major global media outlets swiftly reported the Chinese president's views, which were attracting a lot of attention.
In Chicago, Leo Melamed, chairman emeritus of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, said Hu's visit to the city makes him feel very proud. He also said the exchange center has established close ties with the Chinese financial circle over the past years and would continue to make unremitting efforts to maintain and develop the friendly ties.
In Australia, Christine Edward, a member of the local press, closely followed Hu's visit on television. Edward said China-US trade relations, despite many problems, enjoy more cooperation opportunities, and it is good for both sides to boost exchanges.
World cares about expansion of China-US trade cooperation
During the visit, President Hu reiterated that the two nations already have a foundation for mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, and they should adopt a strategic way of thinking, scrap a zero-sum game, and seek more common interests.
The management of Boeing Civilian Products headquarters based in San Francisco said Boeing's business with relevant Chinese companies best exemplifies mutually beneficial and win-win US-China cooperation.
Wang Yong, director of the Center for International Political Economy of Peking University, said that after the global financial crisis, more and more US companies are regarding China's economic rise as a good opportunity for their development.
Wang said bilateral economic exchanges, instead of being a zero-sum game, can yield mutually beneficial fruits.
Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming, who is accompanying Hu during his visit, said Wednesday a lot of deals between the two countries will be signed during Hu's visit, including Chinese purchases of US products worth a total of $24.9 billion, which testifies to the importance of Sino-US trade relations.
In Argentina, the largest newspaper Clarin said in a commentary that President Hu's visit would significantly boost China-US cooperation.
In Spain, the leading newspaper El Pais said China and the United States, two "giants," have strengthened economic ties to support bilateral ties.
World comments on global significance of China-US trade cooperation
President Hu, during his meeting with Obama, said the two countries should develop a global cooperation of partners to jointly deal with challenges.
Hu also said both sides should together shoulder the responsibilities of responsible and constructive big countries, and push forward the reform of the international financial and trade mechanisms.
Former US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky said US-China collaboration and cooperation will boost the world economy, and this point is very important for China, the United States, Japan, Europe and other regions in the world.
She said China and the United States are complementary in economy, and their bilateral exchanges will have significance for world economic growth.
Surin Pitsuwan, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) secretary general, said firm and close China-US ties will be helpful for boosting investors' confidence in the Southeast Asian region.
He also said Asia's economy is developing fast and its status in the world is on the rise. ASEAN doesn't want to see this trend interrupted, and China-US cooperation is a strong guarantee for this trend.
Professor Severino Cabral, director of Brazil's China and Asia-Pacific Research Institute, said Chinese leaders have many times appealed for reforming the current international financial system, and seeking a mode to better boost global trade.
The appeals would not only be helpful for developing countries, but aid industrialized countries in tiding over the global financial crisis, the professor said.
Cooperation and development are leading the global trend. China and the United States, as the world's two major economies, would benefit from working together and harm themselves by being rivals.
Based on historical experiences and reality, it is evident the United States needs China's cooperation for the sake of its own prosperity, and vice versa. Moreover, a comprehensive, cooperative, mutually beneficial and win-win economic relationship between the two countries is dispensable for world's prosperity.
