Shanghai Art Museum

Cao Qi is a modern example of China's traditional scholar-artist. He works on calligraphy, Chinese painting and stone seal carving. He will exhibit the best of his creations at Shanghai Art Museum until September 7.

Dividing the exhibition hall into four parts, each featuring a theme, Cao will illustrate his understanding of Chinese philosophy and culture through his artwork, from paintings of plants and flowers of auspicious meaning, to calligraphy of Taoism doctrines and the best of his seal carvings.

Shanghai Grand Theatre

Three dance companies: the English National Ballet, the Shanghai Ballet and the Shanghai Jin Xing Dance Company, will give a free presentation of ballet. The English National Ballet represents the Western tradition of the art and Shanghai Ballet has established a distinctive style of its own. Jin Xing Dance Company represents ballet combined with modern dance and Chinese folk culture.

You can go to the theater's box office, present a valid ID and ask for two free tickets per person. Limited tickets are available.

Germany Pavilion

The despair in a lonely hotel room, the stress of an office worker, cultural misunderstandings and beauty in daily success - a musical theatrical play tells about German-Chinese yearnings: jobs and conceptions of life. Random visitors in front of the Germany Pavilion, in front of the stage, within the queue waiting to enter the pavilion will be asked for catchwords of their plan of life, their hopes, dreams and specialties. Within the play these catchwords will be fictionalized and integrated into the dramatic performance.

The show will be presented by a Sino-German ensemble. Actors include Markus Reinhard and Tina Brons from Germany; Qinlin Hu and the internationally renowned dancer and choreographer Xiao Ke from Beijing; director and author Gesine Danckwart; dramatic adviser and curator Susanne Vincenz; and musician and composer Huzi (Wang Bingzhe), a member of the internationally successful band, The Pet Conspiracy.

Jing'an Sculpture Park

Jing'an district has built a sculpture park, where exhibition spaces have been designed for the display of sculptures big and small. The park is having its grand opening exhibition, showcasing sculptures from all over the world. Besides traditional sculptures of bronze and stone, artists also show imaginative use of the art form, presenting water flow with iron and sculpting fire with wood structures. French master Arman's musical-themed pieces, Georges Saulterre's Magic Girl from Fairyland and names shown in China for the first time will be on display.

ddm warehouse

After a week-long workshop at the 7th Asia-Europe Art Camp, 10 artists from Asia and Europe will showcase their artwork on the subject of Moved, Mutated and Disturbed Identities at ddm warehouse. During the workshop, symposiums were held at Minsheng Art Museum and artists worked on their projects in Shanghai. This project is a co-operation between the Asia-Europe Foundation, with financial support from the Luxembourg Pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010. The exhibition will last until Oct 10.

Shanghai Mart

The 14th Shanghai Art Fair kicks off, showcasing artwork from home and abroad, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and so on. The fair brings together master artists' work, which is worth millions of dollars, as well as emerging artists' experimental work. The fair attracts corporate art buyers as well as ordinary people who want to decorate their homes. The largest art market event in town, the fair will go on to September 12.

Three on the Bund

The Italian design exhibition Timeless Time will kick off showcasing 99 pieces of Italian contemporary furniture and lighting design. The selected pieces are full of innovation and imagination, and will strike design lovers with the very thing that Italy is proud of - contemporary design. The exhibition is organized jointly by Federelegno Arredo, the Italian Furniture Association and the Italian Trade Commission, and supported by the Italian Ministry for Economic Development.
