Students find relief

After sitting the National College Entrance Exam, students in Shandong province are planning to visit Expo 2010 Shanghai to release exam pressure. College candidates said Expo Garden is a good place for broadening their horizons. "It will be a good experience to have fun after such an important exam," said a college candidate. Parents said visiting Expo 2010 Shanghai will also help students to understand Shanghai, which will especially benefit those who plan to study in colleges in the city.

Mapping a journey

Volunteers from East China University of Science and Technology have made colorful guide maps to provide visitors with better and quicker services at the Expo Garden. The volunteers have found that most of visitors' questions are about "where go to" and "how to get", and it takes a lot of time to explain. To make things more convenient to visitors, some volunteers talented in graphic design have made illustrative guide maps directing users to the hottest attractions in the Expo Garden.

LED leads

Millions of LED lights are shining bright in the Expo Garden, making the lighting colorful, especially in green. Energy-efficient lighting with LED is in 80 percent of pavilions in the Expo Garden. The energy consumption of LED lighting is only 10 percent of that of incandescent lighting.

Waste not

Although about 60 tons of garbage is produced every day, the noise of garbage trucks and odor of rubbish are absent in the Expo Garden. When visitors put garbage in a litter box, which is connected to a large waste processing system, the waste is automatically feed by compressed air into a pipeline to a waste station. The garbage is then separated, compressed, filtered, purified, deodorized and, finally, carried out of the Expo Garden.

Zero score

Expo 2010 Shanghai organizers said about 70 percent of carbon emission in the Expo Garden will be compensated by the end of October. Various measures to reduce and compensate carbon emission have been adopted in the Expo Garden. The restaurant at the ZED (zero-fossil-energy developments) Pavilion demonstrates some of low-carbon materials, including chairs made from water pipes, mosaic tables made from old tires and ceilings made from bottles. Even the beverage containers are edible.
