Zero waste initiatives

The "zero-kilometer action", an initiative to promote zero waste control, was held recently in the Vanke Pavilion at the Expo Garden. Wang Shi, chairman of Vanke, one of the biggest real estate developers in China, took part in the initiative, sharing his thoughts and experiences on garbage reduction and environmental protection.

Wang reached the peak of Mount Everest on May 22 and planted the flag of Expo 2010 Shanghai. During this trip, all waste created by the climbers was taken back down the mountain, something Wang considers a "zero-kilometer action".

Fountain cleaning

The first 30 volunteers from Litree Company, the supplier of drinking fountains for Expo 2010 Shanghai, started work at the Expo Garden on June 15. The volunteers are responsible for cleaning the 105 drinking fountains in the Expo Garden and maintaining order in drinking areas.

Water supply to the Expo Garden has been increased since early June as temperatures climb and the number of visitors increases. Water quality is being threatened by improper use of the fountains, such as washing hands or dumping tealeaves.

Reservation systems

The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion has launched a reservation rewards system. Visitors who make reservations for the pavilion via the Internet, telephone or by text message will receive a gift. A shopping card worth 5,000 yuan will be given out every two weeks.

Refugee spotlight

The Window into the Lives of Refugees, an event organized by the UNHCR, is being held at the United Nations Pavilion. It will also mark World Refugee Day on June 20.

Visitors to the pavilion will have a chance to listen to refugees' stories and watch films about their lives and resilient spirit. It will last until June 30.

Image Industry Week

The Rhone-Alpes region of France, an exhibitor of the Urban Best Practices Area (UBPA), has launched Image Industry Week, which runs until June 20. The event introduces to China the most innovative image and 3D technologies industries of Rhone-Alpes. Organizer Imaginove arranged various events during the week, both inside and outside the pavilion. Imaginove and Enterprise Rhone-Alpes International signed a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai Multimedia Industry Association.
