The Tale of White Serpent

The Chinese folktale about a scholar falling love with a beautiful woman who is actually a white snake in disguise will be performed by Taiwan Ming Hwa Yuan Opera Company during the Dragon Boat Festival as the opening of the Taiwanese Cultural Festival in Shanghai. Incorporating movie special effects, the performance will have two heroines fly high above the audience. The audience will also play its part in the performance by helping "flood" Jinshan Mountain, an important part of the story.

Bach and the Arabian Nights

The Shanghai Symphony will perform a concert featuring conductor Lin Daye and violinist Zeng Cheng. The program includes Navarra for 2 Violins and Orchestra by Pablo de Sarasate, Double Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor by Bach, and Scheherazade, also known as The Arabian Nights, by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

Dai Shihe

Oil painter Dai Shihe has his first solo exhibition in Shanghai, presenting 65 pieces. Dai has been painting since the 1980s. He loves direct and fresh visual presentations and managed to capture the beauty in true life in the most straightforward fashion. "You have to face your true feelings and think about your painting skills. This uncontrived feeling insured the liveliness of the whole picture. That's why it fascinates me," said the artist.

Dream Project

Paint your dream for the future or write a Chinese character essay on the topic to participate in artist Wang Xiaohui's Dream Project. Carter Larsen lecture

Composer and pianist Carter Larsen will be the guest lecturer at an upcoming art class hosted by Shanghai Grand Theatre. Larsen has made his name conducting and performing in more than 400 concerts. He has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra as a soloist, with television appearances on BBC television and Europe's biggest FM stations. Larsen will talk about classical music widely used in Hollywood movies. Free tickets to the lecture are available at the Shanghai Grand Theatre Box office.
