SHANGHAI - Each day during the three-day May Day holiday more than 190 tonnes of garbage on average was collected from the Shanghai World Expo Park, an executive of a garbage collection business said Tuesday.

Yuan Shumin, executive officer of a unit of Shanghai Environmental Industry Co., said the amount was more than expected because organizers had increased food supply and allowed visitors to take food into the park that opened Saturday.

The amount of garbage could increase if the amount of people visiting the park per day climbed, Yuan said.

Organizers expect about 70 million people to visit the Shanghai World Expo during its six-month duration, or 380,000 per day.

About 145,700 visitors visited the Expo Tuesday, bringing the total number of visitors in the first four days to 710,700, according to the official website of the World Expo 2010.
