US Under-Secretary of State for Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs Robert Hormats said Washington should rethink its role and listen to other countries' views, especially those from Asian countries.

He said the United States, being a leading economy, should be both leader and listener.

"We should exercise our leadership in a different way. We should take into account issues of emerging economies, and make sure everyone benefit," he said.

Hormats made the remarks Saturday while participating in a panel discussion at the Boao Forum for Asia on "From G8 to G20: New Architecture, New Rules and new players."

He is experienced in dealing with China-related issues and served as senior economic advisor to Henry Kissinger when he was very young.

He met with China's State Council Information Office Director Wang Chen on Thursday in Beijing about the development and administration of the Internet.
