Moving towards Millennium goals

At a September 2008 UN conference, Premier Wen Jiabao announced China would take the following actions to achieve Millennium Development goals:

In the coming five years, China will double the number of agricultural technology demonstration centers in developing countries.

It will send an additional 1,000 agricultural experts and technicians overseas, and provide agricultural training for 3,000 persons.

China will contribute $30 million to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization to establish a trust fund for projects and activities designed to help developing countries improve agricultural practices.

China will increase exports and aid to countries facing food shortages.

In the coming five years, China will give 10,000 additional scholarships to developing countries and offer training programs for 1,500 principals and teachers in Africa.

China will ensure that the 30 hospitals in African countries are properly staffed and equipped, training 1,000 doctors, nurses and managers.

China will cancel the outstanding interest-free loans extended to least developed countries that mature before the end of 2008. It will give zero-tariff treatment to 95 percent of products from selected least developed countries.

In the coming five years, China will develop 100 small-scale, clean energy projects for developing countries, including small hydropower, solar power and bio-gas projects.
