According to the association, the most popular fields of interest for Taiwan students are economics, management and medicine.

Currently, 202 mainland-based universities recruit Taiwan students through a joint exam program for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students. Another eight universities receive direct applications from Taiwan students.

In recent years, China has adopted a set of new policies to give Taiwan students the same status as mainland students to attract them to study in the mainland' s institutions of higher learning.

Also, students from Taiwan studying at universities on the Chinese mainland began to pay the same tuition and boarding fees as their mainland peers as of September 2005.

They have also benefited from a scholarship fund that distributes 7 million yuan (around US$979,000) each year.
