China appoints acting governor of northwest province

LANZHOU - Liu Weiping, deputy secretary of the Gansu Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), was appointed acting governor of the province on Thursday.

Liu, 57, was appointed at the 16th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th Gansu Provincial People's Congress held in Lanzhou, the provincial capital.

The session also accepted the resignation of Xu Shousheng, former governor of Gansu and now acting governor of Hunan Province.

Liu is a native of Fujin City of northeastern Heilongjiang Province. He joined the CPC in 1974.

Between 2001 and 2006, Liu served as vice governor and vice secretary of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee. He was appointed as vice secretary of the CPC Gansu Provincial Committee in November 2006.
