Government subsidized housing for rent in Beijing will not accept applications from college graduates at present until the release of new specific regulations, the Beijing Daily reported.

Under the present regulation, homes will only be made available for families who have passed the application verification for three kinds of welfare-oriented public housing including low-rent, economical, and price-limit homes in the capital.

However, all applicants for the scheme should have the Beijing hukou, residency paperwork, which excludes a large number of low-income residents including graduates in the university-studded capital city.

It had been reported the subsidized housing scheme would start to accept applicants without the hukou, especially those low-income groups. But many face an anxious wait for the new regulations to be issued.

According to statistics from the Beijing Housing Construction Committee, more than 10,000 households had registered for subsidized housing as there were 8,000 sets of apartments kicking off construction in 2009 and another 10,000 sets were under planning in the city.
