FUZHOU, Jiangxi - A dike breached after days of torrential rains in east China's Jiangxi Province was fixed on Sunday following around-the-clock repair efforts by hundreds of people.

The 347-meter-wide breach was blocked at 6:16 p.m. Sunday, three days ahead of schedule, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

This would allow about 100,000 evacuated residents in Fuzhou to return home earlier than expected, said an official with the headquarters.

The Fuhe River which runs through Fuzhou City, Jiangxi, breached its banks on Monday. The repair work started early Friday.

On Wednesday, another part of the river dike burst. The 130-m-wide breach was being used to channel out water and would not immediately be fixed, according to the local government.
