The family of a female Chinese student who died after being beaten and sexually assaulted in New York City, the United States, arrived in the city Monday.

Yao Yu’s mother and two other family members were granted visas and arrived at Newark Airport, three days after she was taken off life support.

Police say Yao, 23, was walking home from a grocery store in Flushing, Queens, when Carlos Salazar Cruz, 28, hit her over the head with a pipe, dragged her into an alley and raped her.

There were several passers-by, but none of them tried to stop the violence, according to anonymous sources.

Police say Cruz was arrested in connection with Yao’s attack after a witness called 911 later.

Yao spent nearly a week on life support following the May 16th attack.

Earlier Monday, anti-crimes groups held a vigil against violence at the scene of her attack. They're urging others to report violence if they see it.

Yao had arrived in New York on a student visa from China two months ago.
