Dai minority in dry Xishuangbanna of Yunnan province will go ahead with the water splashing activities during the traditional Water-splashing Festival, with the highlight of a rain dance to relieve the drought, the Beijing Times reported.
The news has spurred online criticism for wasting water resources during the drought in Yunnan. But the local administration said the celebration had a long tradition and won't be canceled because of the drought.
"We will highlight other activities, like rain dance and boat race, and we will do our best to recycle the splashing water," said Duan Jinhua, deputy director of the communication department of Xishuangbanna, reports said.
