Eight personnel of Chinese peacekeeping forces in Haiti were buried and more than 10 were missing after a powerful earthquake struck Haiti Tuesday afternoon, Liu Xiangyang, deputy chief of the National Earthquake Disaster Emergency Rescue Team told China Daily Wednesday.
A 7.0-magnitude quake hit the Caribbean island country at 4:53 pm local time on Tuesday, collapsing numerous buildings including the Presidential Palace. The earthquake may lead to thousands of deaths, said Karel Zelenka, a Catholic Relief Services representative in Port-au-Prince.
China sent a 50-member rescue team to Haiti and they will set off on Wednesday.
China has dispatched 125 peacekeepers to Haiti, including six females.
