LANZHOU: Five people were missing and six were injured Thursday after a chemical plant exploded in northwest China's Gansu Province, local government officials said.

The blast happened at around 5:30 pm at a chemical plant run by the Lanzhou Chemical Company of the China National Petroleum Corporation in the provincial capital of Lanzhou, the officials said at a press briefing Thursday night.

The plant was 30 km away from downtown. Residential buildings near the plant were not affected, the officials said.

The exact death toll and property losses were still unknown. Local safety authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
