Piyang looks to marine-related sectors for new growth

Another of the key industrial development areas along the Liaoning coastal economic development belt, Dalian Piyang Industrial Zone is envisioned to spread across 170 sq km and be home to shipping and logistics, equipment manufacturing, marine biology and garment production.

Subsidiary industries will be modern agriculture and coastal tourism, according the development blueprint.

The industrial zone had about 8.1 billion yuan in GDP last year, accounting for 27.5 percent of the total of Pulandian, the city that is home to the zone, with 3.42 billion yuan in fixed asset investment comprising about 22 percent of the city's total.

The zone covers the five townships of Pikou, Yangshufang, Chengzhitan, Daliujia and Jiahemiao, which are jointly helping improve its infrastructure facilities.

The five towns with a combined population of 229,000 also provide ample human resources needed for the zone's development.

It now has 583 enterprises that employ 65,000 people and generated combined sales revenue of 29.9 billion yuan last year.

The zone has realized 1.79 billion yuan in investment this year, of which of $12.81 million was utilized foreign investment, which together funded 36 new projects and continued 20 from last year.

Improvements to 40.2 km of the Binghai highway that runs through the industrial zone will be completed before October 1 this year.

Expansion of Pikou port is also underway that when complete will enable accommodation of ships up to 10,000 tons.

Design for the 1.38 km Haigang road is now underway that will be built at a cost of 30 million yuan.

Construction is scheduled to begin this year on a 22.8 million yuan garbage treatment and recycling plant in the eastern part of Pulandian city that will handle 100 tons of refuse a day.

A 4.48-hectare sewage treatment plant is also planned.
