A fugitive for five years finally surrendered to the police in Changge, Henan province, and paid her hit-and-run victim's family more than 100,000 yuan in compensation last week.

Shi Qiaomin was released on bail pending trial a day later.

Shi had mowed down a pedestrian, surnamed Qian, who died on the spot, with her motorbike before fleeing the scene. Her name was included in the police most wanted list.

After turning herself in, Shi said she worked hard and saved money for five years to compensate the victim's family.

Police said Shi and the victim's family had reached an agreement regarding the compensation.
