Some 830 bird perches have been erected on the grasslands in Tanggulashan town to attract hawks, which in turn can kill the rats that infest the Yangtze River source region.

The town, referred to as the "first town of the Yangtze River source", has for long suffered, with rats destroying the grasslands, causing desertification.

In 1998, the local government started to wipe out the rats with a chemical called rodenticide. Though the chemical killed the rats, it also had a negative impact on the grassland.

The government recently came up with the idea to attract hawks and wolves to kill the rats.
