ASTANA/KAZAKHSTAN: China’s proper handling of the Xinjiang Urumqi July 5 riot and its joint efforts with Central Asian countries on combating "three evil forces" has not only been conducive for the stability in Xinjiang, but also benefit Kazakhstan, said the country’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev.
He made the remarks while hold a joint press conference with Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is currently visiting the Central Asian country.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an intergovernmental mutual-security organization set up by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in 2001 in Shanghai.
In security cooperation, China and Kazakhstan had established mechanisms within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to combat the common threats of terrorism, extremism and separatism.
Kazakhstan firmly supported China's fight against the "East Turkistan Islamic Movement," a terrorist group on the sanction list of the UN Security Council committee, Cheng Guoping, Chinese Ambassador to Kazakhstan, told reporters earlier last week.
Kazakhstan showed understanding and supported China's measures to safeguard stability of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region after the July 5 riot in Urumqi, capital of the northwestern region of China, Cheng said.
