The head teacher of a middle school where eight children died and 26 others were injured in a stampede has been arrested, people.com.cn reported.
Ye Jizhi, head of Yucai Middle School in Xiangxiang city, Hunan province was arrested by police along with another school officer.
The students had just finished their evening study session yesterday and were going downstairs when one of them toppled on the stairs of the second floor and caused others to lose balance.
Seven boys and a girl, aged from 11 to 14, were killed in the stampede. Eight others are still receiving treatment in hospital. Three with minor injures have been discharged.
The bank account of the school has been frozen and the director of the education bureau in Xiangxiang was removed from office, the report said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation and the school has resumed class.
The 12-year-old Yucai Middle School is a junior high school with 3,500 students and covers eight hectares. It is one of the best schools in Xiangxiang, a county-level city with a population of 900,000.
