Police in Anshun, Guizhou province, arrested two of three suspects who allegedly killed a migrant worker, whose phone was used to send a courtship message to the girlfriend of one of the accused last Monday.
Xiao, 24, the deceased, lent his cell phone to a colleague, surnamed Luo, who sent a text message to his love interest, asking her to marry him.
The girl's boyfriend, however, read the SMS and asked two of his friends to accompany him to kill the sender.
The three went to Xiao's factory and stabbed him to death, and only later realized the deceased hadn't sent the text message at all.
Police are still trying to trace the third suspect.
