Chinese doctors provide free eye surgery in Vietnam

BACGIANG, VIETNAM: The free eye surgery program, named "Action for Bright Eye", by Chinese optical doctors for Vietnamese cataract patients living in the northern Bac Giang province of Vietnam was held on Tuesday.

The eye surgery program on cataract patients was organized by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in coordination with the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations. The participation include representatives from provincial health authorities and doctors of China and Vietnam, the Chinese embassy in Vietnam and provincial authorities of Bac Giang province.

Speaking at the event, Feng Zuoku, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said that China and Vietnam have been enjoying a long-lasting traditional friendship relations. The eye surgery program by Chinese optical doctors to bring the light to the cataract patients in the northern Bac Giang province will be of importance in pushing forward the traditional friendship between the two countries.

The Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries will intensify information exchanges and cooperation with the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations to advance the bilateral all-round strategic cooperative partnership for the benefits of the two peoples, said Feng.

Tran Dac Loi, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations said that Vietnam highly appreciated valuable assistance provided by Chinese optical doctors. It is a vivid evidence for the development of the traditional friendship of the two peoples. It is expected that there will be more Vietnamese cataract patients having eye surgery under the support of China.

The free eye surgery program, started in the Bac Giang province of Vietnam in Nov. 14, was successfully carried out on 97 local patients aged from 87 to 47, helping them improve their vision.

The free eye surgery program on cataract patients was initiated by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries in 2008 with an aim of providing support of China to neighboring countries. There have been so far about 300 cataract patients in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Cambodia, Mongolia and Vietnam receiving eye surgery by Chinese doctors.
