Thief calls cops to save him from angry mob

A thief who was detained by a security guard while trying to steal cars in a housing complex had to seek police help in Changsha, capital of Hunan province, on Monday.

Police officers were surprised and did not know whether to laugh or cry when they were told it was the thief who had phoned the police hotline to seek help.

"I sought police help because I was afraid of being beaten up by security guards and local residents," the thief told police officers.

The thief, in his 30s, was caught in the act and tied up by security guard Huang Changhua at about 9 pm. He was scared after angry residents surrounded him and called the police.
