A man is contemplating suing a bank and the police in Haikou, Hainan province, after his mobile phone was stolen while he was withdrawing cash from a counter.

The man, surnamed Lu, asked bank officials to show him the surveillance camera recordings after his phone went missing from his pocket, but the bank refused, saying the surveillance tapes were confidential.

He then contacted the police, who wouldn't launch an investigation for lack of evidence.

A lawyer has told Lu he can actually win compensation from the bank if indeed his phone was stolen in the premises.
