"Firstly, China's development is inextricably linked to the common interests of humanity," Wu told a gathering hosted by 10 friendly organizations, including the US Chamber of Commerce, the US-China Business Council and the National Committee on US-China Relations. China's success in running its own affairs and ensuring a better life for the 1.3 billion people is, in itself, a historic contribution to the development and well-being of mankind, said Wu, who is chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress. He said the Chinese people now are on the whole leading a moderately prosperous life. "It is clear to all that if China did not seek development or failed to develop, it would be a disaster not only to the Chinese people, but also to people around the world," he added. Secondly, China's development has presented development opportunities to all other countries and people throughout the world have benefited from it, the top Chinese legislator said. He cited China's development last year as an example, saying China contributed to 22 percent of world economic growth and over 9 percent of global trade growth in 2008.
Wu is on a week-long official goodwill visit to the United States, the final stop of his three-nation America tour, which has already taken him to Cuba and the Bahamas. |
