Newly urban employed hits 7.57M in first 8 months

BEIJING: New employment positions filled in China's urban areas hit 7.57 million in the first eight months of 2009, Yin Weimin, minister of human resources and social security, said Wednesday.

Yin told a press conference that this number accounted for 84 percent of the government's target of 9 million for the whole year.

"The registered unemployment rate in urban areas was about 4.3 percent, which was a relatively low level," he said.

According to Yin, working population of the whole society stood at 775 million in 2008, a big rise from 207 million in 1952.
