Friends congratulate Cai Wei (L) on his admission into a PhD program in Chinese philology and etymology at Shanghai’s prestigious Fudan University in Jinzhou, in northeast China's Jilin province, July 16, 2009. Cai Wei only has a high school diploma and worked in a factory until he was laid off in 1994, but he has studied ancient Chinese in his spare time for over 20 years. His dedication and knowledge impressed Professor Qiu Xigun, an expert in ancient Chinese documents, who offered him a spot in the PhD program and waived the requirement that he take usual entrance exam.
