Wife killed husband in self-defense, villagers say

At least 168 villagers pleaded with a court to grant lenience to a woman who killed her husband in Lishui city, Jiangsu province, in self-defense.

Ye Zhang'ai, 36, attacked her gambler husband Huang Xionghua, 39, after he repeatedly beat her. He died in January after she resisted his attack when he got drunk and beat her.

Afterwards, she was going to commit suicide but her mother-in-law persuaded her to surrender to police for the sake of the 9-year-old son.

Her in-laws were among those who wrote to the court and begged for lesser punishment for Ye. She was sentenced to seven years in prison on Wednesday.
