Injured whale rescued from hidden reef

A beaked whale stranded on reefs was rescued from Nan'ao Island in east Guangdong province last week.

The 4-m-long whale suffered gashes after grounding itself about 2 pm.

Personnel from local marine, police and fishery management departments took more than two hours to extricate it and guide it back into the ocean.

Local fishermen reported the incident to relevant departments when they found the wounded whale.

It was the 10th to be rescued in Nan'ao waters in the past year.

A growing number of whales have been found in recent years thanks to an improving local ocean environment.
