600 overseas unis to take part in education expo

Representatives from more than 600 overseas colleges and universities from more than 30 countries and regions will attend this weekend's China Education Expo 2008 at the China Word Trade Center in Beijing.

"To guarantee high-quality overseas education programs for Chinese students, we have insisted that all participating institutions have official attendance approval from their national or regional government education department," Zong Wa, executive director of China Center for International Education Exchange, the expo organizer, said on Friday.

About 70 Canadian universities, colleges and language schools will participate in the expo, as Canada has become a popular choice for Chinese students.

The United States will be represented by 50 higher learning institutes. Last year, more than 67,000 Chinese students went to the US to study last year, up 8.2 percent on 2006.

Representatives from about 70 United Kingdom universities and colleges will attend the expo, and the British embassy will also provide on-site counseling to help students understand the country's detailed education, training, scholarship and visa policies.

More than 30 universities from Germany will attend the expo, offering education programs in everything from information technology and machinery manufacturing to environmental protection, architecture, law and literature.

About 40 universities from France will be represented at the event, 20 from the Netherlands, 50 from Spain, 20 from Russia and 32 from Japan.

Italy, Australia and New Zealand will also take part in the expo.
